Phyliss R. Ewell

Phyliss R. Ewell found herself homeless after escaping an abusive relationship with her son’s father. During this challenging time, she sought refuge by staying on her niece’s couch with her youngest child, while her daughter remained with a relative to finish the school year. The apartment was located in Duquesne, Pennsylvania—a city Phyliss was unfamiliar with and where she only intended to stay briefly. However, a few months later, she applied to take over the lease when her niece moved away. Upon signing the lease, she found the stability she needed for herself and her children, ultimately remaining in Duquesne for over 40 years until her passing in November 2022.

What began as a temporary refuge became the place where Phyliss built a home for her family. Duquesne offered valuable resources and a supportive community where her children thrived. Much of their success can be attributed to the opportunities and support they received in this neighborhood.

In honor of her life and legacy, her church—pastored by her son—has purchased the former Boys and Girls Club located at 938 Chestnut Street in Duquesne. This facility will now be known as the Phyliss R. Ewell Resource/Recreation Center, serving as a lasting reminder to the community and surrounding areas that with God, all things are possible.
